Design and planning for residential remodel with a modern take on the traditional Japanese farmhouse aesthetic, achieving strength, clean lines, and warmth. Bamboo, brick, wood, and steel elements have been kept bare, allowing the honesty of the materials to come through. Plaster was removed from the fireplace, returning it to its bare-brick state and bringing warmth into the living space. Bricks from an old chimney have been repurposed for use as a column, echoing the warmth of the fireplace while acting as an ordering element. A rice-paper shoji screen effect was achieved through the use of industrial fiberglass panels, creating privacy while bringing in sunlight. The articulated ceiling has been kept bare and fully visible as well, pulling together the strength, honesty, and warmth of the house. |
